The poem One Today, written and read by Richard Blanco for
Barack Obama’s 2013 Presidential Inauguration, is a sweeping
panorama of American life and personality, revealing both
diversity and commonality in our society. It’s words embrace
our challenges, our struggles, our strengths, and our common
direction into the future. It highlights the hope and optimism
that we are all capable of, and encourages us to embrace it
together. The music seeks to reflect the varieties of expression
that dwell inn the poem, organized in four movements, each
in a different musical style.
The three shorter works are settings of poems written by
Richard Blanco for the Boundaries collection, a collaboration
with photographer Jacob Hessler in 2018, and available through
Two Ponds Press. These pieces are represented in divergent
musical styles, elaborating on the introspective and personally
challenging nature of the poems, which explore the boundaries
of race, gender, ethnicity and class that haunt our nation.
